How to Look Modern in Pearls! | The Pearl Source Review

How to Look Modern in Pearls! | Dressy Casual | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration
Hi Ladies,
I'm back!! First, I want to say that I'm still having some trouble with the domain migration (surprise! surprise!). The menu bar isn't working properly, and we are working hard to fix it, so please bear with me. :)

Now, on to more fun things! Today, I'm pleased today to partner with The Pearl Source on a review of their Freshwater Pearl Necklace. To be honest, I'd never given much thought to owning real pearls, since I don't spend much time dining with the Queen of England. I generally thought of pearls as being stuffy and the only way to wear them was to layer them. Boy was I wrong!

Gold and Cranberry | Business Casual Attire

Hi Ladies,
Is anything more beautiful than gold and cranberry? I'm not sure, but as soon as I saw this skirt and cardigan together, I knew that I had to add the shoes and some gold. What do you think about the monochrome look? Are there any colors that you love to wear head to toe?

How much do you spend on clothes? | October Clothing Budget

How much do you spend on clothes? | October Clothing Budget | Fall Fashion | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration
Hi Ladies,
I'm baaack with this month's update on spending. :) If you remember from last  month, I went waaaay over budget on shopping. After tallying up all my expenses and smacking myself in the forehead, I wound up retunring a pair of $160 brown Mary Janes and about $120 worh of clothes from Old Navy. The Mary Janes were cute, but they can often look funny with leggings, so I probably wouldn't have gotten a ton of use out of them. As for deciding what to take back from Old Navy, I focused on things that I liked, but didn't love or were similar to stuff I already owned. Whew!

This month, I did much better. Since I live in leggings during the winter and it's starting to get cold, I focused on getting some easy weekend/ running errands/ working from home wear, since that's what I do the most of. I bought a few tee shirts, long cardigans and some leggings. All via Old Navy and Target, so the prices was great. On a side note...I'm REALLY impressed with Target's tee-shirts. They have alot of different varieties from heavy weight cotton to the thinner vintage ones. Plus they are all about $8. J. Crew Factory had previously been my favoirite place for tees, becauise I loved thier vintage wash, but I think that Target's Merona brand is a less boxy, looks better and is cheaper.

So, how was your shopping month?

4 Long Sleeve Tees (TARGET) $8 * 4 = $32
1 Open Cardigan (OLD NAVY) $17
1 Cowl Neck Sweater (OLD NAVY) $8
1 Black Sweater (OLD NAVY) $12
3 Leggings (OLD NAVY) $16 * 3 = $48

TOTAL =  $117

Breast Cancer Awareness with Kiyonna | Jewelry for All Sizes

Hi Ladies,
I have a lot of surprises today, so let's get started!! :)
Breast Cancer Awareness with Kiyonna | Jewerely for All Sizes | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Pink Positive Breast Cancer Awareness with Kiyonna

Hi Ladies,
As you know, October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. In honor of this illness and to remind people to be conscious of early detection, one of my favorite curvy clothing designers (Kiyonna) has released a limited edition crochet pink cardigan! I love waterfall cardigans for the fall and this one is a nice shade of dusky pink that goes well with a lot of autumnal colors. Please note that the standards for checking breast cancer have recently changed, and the tagline from CNN is "New breast cancer guidelines: screen later, less often!" (source) So, please read this brief article for more details. As always, if you are interested in this cardigan, Kiyonna's best deal right now is 20% off orders of $150 or more at Kiyonna.com with code FALL2015! Be sure to check out their "Real Curves" section in the sidebar to see how other bloggers have rocked this top! :)

While we are on this topic, keep an eye on your moles, too! Being African American, skin cancer was never high on my list of things to worry about; however, I have fried myself to a literal, peeling crisp a few times in my life, so I know it's not impossible. Therefore, when I noticed a mole on my chest start to change shape, I immediately went to my dermatologist and had it removed. It was a quick and virtually painless visit. So, don't let concerns like that keep you from seeing a doctor. (Just don't look in the test tube after they are done....yuck!)

Soft Launch of "Jewelry for All Sizes"

Today, I'm soft-launching another solution for women to get more love out of their wardrobes! Have you ever had the problem of not being able buy bangles, because they slip off your wrists? I have! Have you even fallen in love with a ring at a store and then found that it only goes up to a XL, and XL would take the Jaws of Life to get it off? I have! :( Therefore, I've decided to begin offering Jewelry for All Sizes! This is a line of adjustable and sized jewelry that I'll be selling through an online shop. I'm starting with this adjustable gold, double pearl ring that goes wonderful with fall colors. I really like the creaminess of these faux pearls, because they go well with russets, oranges, cranberries, cedar green, etc. In addition, all items ship for free!
Most importantly, this effort gives me the chance to do something I haven't been able to do a lot this year: financially help the community. I've donated my time this year, but I haven't really been in the position to donate financially like I used to do. I'm still working through the details, but I like the idea of donating career appropriate jewelry to Dress for Success as they help clothe and train woman returning to work. I also want to use some of the proceeds to financially support Girls who Code. (As a female in the IT world, I loved learning to code but had never considered majoring in it until I took my first mandatory elective. Programming, even if it's learning basic Access or how to write Excel macros, is extremely empowering to any business owner, manager of the household or college student. More details to come! :)

Gold Double Pearl Ring, $20 (free shipping in US!)

A Merry Modern Halloween

A Merry Modern Halloween | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration
Hi Ladies,
If you remember from last year, I take a pretty laid back approach to Halloween. It was always my favorite holiday as a child (can anyone say candy?). However, as an adult, I just can't get into elaborate costumes. Maybe it's laziness. Maybe it's just lack of inspiration, but I suspect that its my disdain for expensive, cheaply made polyester outfits that can only be worn once a year. So, for those of you who feel the same way, here are some ideas!

Sweater Skirts | Business Casual Attire | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
Whew! It's been quite a morning. Before I tell you why, let me make two important announcements:
  • Petite Career Girl is now officially Curves, Curls and Careers! Yay! (I'll go into the reasons why in another post.) My domain will be changing soon along with my site design. (Yes, one more site design!)
  • I will also be switching my posting schedule to Tues, Thursday and Saturday starting next week. Lots more fun stuff is coming up...can't wait! :)
I had the pleasure of shooting today's pics with Regan from Reagan In My Own World. Usually, we take pictures inside my house, but today we decided to do them outside. This wasn't a great idea...

First, it was 47 degrees outside. Somehow we still had the idea that it was in the 70s, because we both had bare hands and legs. We froze! Then, while taking pictures in the driveway of my condo (my own driveway), a man jogged by and yelled "I know you effing saw me!" at us. (Except he didn't use the word "effing".) Ooookkkk...

Hi Ladies,
How's your week going? I'm having a good one! I'm back on the wagon eating-wise! It took a stern talk from my doctor, but I think I got my motivation back. (It's only been one day, so I can't declare victory yet, but I'd love any happy vibes you could send my way.) I'm also happy to announce that I've got a new blog design coming out in the next few days! You should find it faster, more mobile responsive and free of the newspaper subscription pop-up. (Thanks for bearing with me while I tried that out. It's confirmed: pop-ups are annoying!)

Old Navy Jewelry Shopping Haul

Hi Ladies,
I'm really excited about today's post! First of all, I finally did something that I've been putting off for years: making a you tube video!! I actually recorded one the day I launched my blog (2 years ago), but was immediately horrified by how I sound on tape and vowed never to release it. LOL. Well, 2 years later, I've overcome my fears, learned how to work my computer camera and dusted off my You Tube page. Here we go!

Irresistable Me Diamond Flat Iron Review & The Big Chop!

Hi Ladies,
Welcome to today's hair themed post!
Whack! That's the sound I heard in the hairstylist's chair on Friday. About 5 inches of my hair fell to the floor and was swept up by the assistant. Why? Well, about a year ago I stopped getting my hair straightened with chemical relaxers. It wasn't a conscious decision. It's just that I was getting my hair blow dried every week, because my local salon was so cheap and then one day it had been six months since I'd had a relaxer. Then it was 8 months. By that time, I didn't see the point of getting one. I always thought that I would never give up relaxers, because my hair was so easy to manager with one, but it's actually simpler now.

How to Wear Pantone's Fall Colors: Biscaye Bay & Reflecting Pond (TEAL)

How to Wear Pantone's Fall Colors: Teal Biscaye Bay & Reflecting Pond

Hi Ladies,
These are my favoite of all the Pantone colors! Honestly, if you put anythign in a blue-green color then I'm gonna love it. When I go shopping for furniture at flea markets, I have to take my sister along with me. Otherwise, I'll wind up paying top price for any crumbly old desk, with drawers that don't work and a bad paint job, just because its teal. It's an addicition.

Kiyonna lace skirt | dressy casual | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
Today I'm sharing my new lace, a-line skirt from Kiyonna.com. They are an online retailer focusing on sizes 10+. As a member of their Blogger Brigade, I will always have access to their best deals to share with you, and right now you can get 20% off orders of $150 or more, using the code: FALL2015! I think that this skirt is a great example of how they design clothes with the curvy frame in mind. This A-line shape is a great way to highlight your curves. Plus, the classic shape made out of sheer fabric walks the line between sexy and classy perfectly! I did make one alteration to it and really love how it turned out, so keep reading for details!

How much do you spend on clothes? | September Clothing Budget | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
This was a really, really bad shopping month for me. Eew! Retailers make it so hard to behave in September. First, when the seasons change, all your summer clothes suddenly suck. Second, they put the cutest styles out at the beginning of Fall. It's like going to a carnival and not buying any cotton candy or funnel cakes. It's impossible!

Petite Career Girl's 2nd Birthday

Why I write a fashion blog.
(My very first picture and very first blog post.)
Hi Ladies,
Exactly two years ago from today, I started Petite Career Girl. I gotta tell you that I'm still surprised that I actually did it. (Delighted, but surprised.) It's a big deal putting your pictures up on the internet and there are a million things that you don't know that you'll realize that you need to know about running a blog. To be honest, had I known how much I had to learn...I probably wouldn't have started it to begin with. :)

Hi Ladies,
It's fall and you know what that means...legging time!!! My favorite time of the year! I love leggings because they look great with flats, boots and heels (sometimes..lol). They make me look taller, highlight curves and this new printed legging trend means that I don't have to bore people to death with black ones. Horray!

New eShakti Dress

New eShakti Dress | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration
Hi Ladies,
Sorry for the underexposed pictures. I took some really wonderful pictures of this dress and then accidentally deleted all of them. :( Then I had what I'll classify as a "photography malfunction". I don't know if it was the photographer (me), the camera or the lighting, but I couldn't get the lighting right!!! Argh!!! Then my camera kept turning off every time I took a picture. (I had dropped my it a week before and was freaking out.) Anyway, I'm happy to say that after one frantic trip to the photography store and my refusal to leave until they told me what I was doing wrong, I figured out what was the problem. I'm going to go ahead and share it, because even though it's  boring and highly technical, it gives you an idea of how ridiculously prone to screwing-up photography is. (If you ever see a photograph that you love, thank the photographer - she probably sweat blood and tears in order to take the shot.)

How to Style a Swing Dress

How to Style a Swing Dress | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
You know how I've been raving about Old Navy's dresses this year? Well, their fall collection does not disappoint! I got this jersey swing dress in a few different colors because it's the perfect thing to throw on for running errands or to dress up for a night out. This is the Petite length, but I also got a few in Misses from the store. They come in all sorts of fall colors, plus two stripes. One thing to note is that the Petite length is a little short in the back, so no running! :)

Revolutionary New Shoe Concept by Alessandra Alberta Chiolo!

Revolutionary New Shoe Concept by Alessandra Alberta Chiolo | Alessandra Alberta Chiolo Modular Shoe System

Hi Ladies,
You know that friend who's shoe closet you always envy? She owns pink heels, sparkly sandals, sophisticated stilettos, adorable ballet flats and everything in between? I do! She's another blogger, but her shoe closet is literally the size of my bedroom. :) I've always envied those women, but due to space, money and the plethora of uncomfortable shoes on the market - that will never be me. However, Alessandra Alberta Chiolo is trying to make that dream come true for all of us!

She has created a line of shoes that will allow you to customize your heels. You choose the upper, heel and plateau to compose the Albertine. Combining different models of the last two elements will allow you to create 3600 combinations! Can you imagine how much space this would save? Plus, the shoes are being designed for comfort with the choice of the best materials and use of the most advanced technologies.

In order to launch this line in US markets, she has started a crowd funding campaign. In addition, the US line will be made in the USA. More details on the Kickstarter campaign can be found here: (https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/795911935/albertine-revolutionary-shoes). I'm very excited about this product and look forward to trying it when it hits the shelves!

Please note: All opinions are my own, however Petite Career Girl was compensated for writing this post.

My favorite items from Nordstrom that are Worth the Price! | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
I love a good deal, however other than at the yearly sale, Nordstrom's can be a bit pricey. I still love shopping with them because their service and quality generally can't be beat. One year, I spent four hours shopping for jewelry at the Nordstrom in Santa Monica. I had found the most wonderful salesman (who now works at the David Yurman counter in The Grove), who had a great eye and we basically tried on everything in the department.:)

This past Sunday I got to meet up with Regan from Regan In My Own World! She's another Charlotte blogger with cute style. I can't tell you how much fun it is to do a photo shoot with another person and she's so sweet! It can get really boring taking pictures by yourself with a remote and tripod. Besides, you can get really cute, candid shots when someone else is pulling the trigger. (These aren't the pictures we took, but I'll start sharing them next week.) Can't wait!

How to Wear Pantone's Fall Colors: Dried Herb

Hi Ladies,
Today is the first day of my new series: "How to Wear Fall Colors". If you don't know, Pantone picks six or so colors every season and dictates, I mean touts them as the season's colors. Then, everyone from clothing companies to furniture manufacturers falls in line and Volia! you can pick out a desk to match your pants! I've started with Dried Herb, which looks suspiciously like olive green to me.

How to Decorate a Boring Bathroom

Boring Bathroom Makeover | Apartment Bathroom Makeover | Bathroom Decoration
I hope you are enjoying your Labor Day weekend! I'm probably eating veggie hamburgers with whole wheat bread and drinking water while you read this, so enjoy some BBQ for me! As you know I recently moved, and left a one bedroom apartment for a two bedroom condo. So, I now have two bathrooms and bedrooms to decorate! Yay! Today, I want to share my bathroom redecoration with you. For most of you who've ever lived in an apartment, you know the "boring bathroom syndrome", where the walls are beige and the cabinets are brown. It's a very clean look, but not an exciting one. I've always struggled with how to decorate them, because well...they are bathrooms. It's a very function-oriented space and it's hard for me to think beyond towels and a shower curtain. However, after scouring Pinterest I decided to treat my bathroom like any other room and actually decorate it. I love the results!

Flare jeans FOR ALL SIZES

Flare jeans FOR ALL SIZES | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
Flares are back! Flares are back! Flares are back! I'm super excited. :) Every fashion magazine is calling them the new denim trend, and I couldn't be more happy. I used to wear bell bottoms in highschool, but haven't worn them since. However, I vow to get a pair this season. Here are some good options in Misses, Petite and Plus!

Petite Flare Jeans

How sophisticated does Selma Hayek look in these dark denim flares?? They are perfect for petite women when worn with heels. For a long, leggy look make sure to get them tailored so that they just barely touch the floor.

Curvy/ Plus Size Flare Jeans

J. Lo always looks awesome, but she looks extra awesome in her bells! Flares can highlight a curvy bod, especially if they fit snugly and you wear them with heels. I recommend taking the heels you are most likely to wear with your jeans and getting them hemmed to be two millimeters off the floor. Make sure you buy ones with a little spandex in them so they hug your curves.

Regular Size Flare Jeans

Leggy ladies, you legs will look even longer in these! Whew..that was a lot of L's. :) Just make sure to get ones long enough so that they graze the floor. You can even try the Rachel Zoe look and get them a little longer so the legs bunch. She alwasy looks so fantastically hip and slouchy!

Hi Ladies,
Greetings from D.C.! We actually decided to go here instead of Charleston. My parent's used to own a company that had an office in D.C., so I pretty much grew up here. My parents would go every other week and we would get to come up to go to the Smithsonian or shopping. It's probably my favorite city in America. I have never had a bad or even just okay meal here! Every time we go to a restaurant it's phenomenal!

How much do you spend on makeup? | August Budget

How much do you spend on makeup? | MY FAVORITE UNDER $50 MAKEUP | August Budget
Hi Ladies,

I didn't spend any money on clothes this month! Wow! I can't make a claim like that since middle school when my mom bought all my clothes. Instead of shopping for clothes I decide to update my makeup box. I haven't bought any in over a year, and I was out of foundation, mascara, etc. I also wanted a kit that was easy to apply and could be kept in my purse. I realized that since I now own my own personal styling service, I need to represent my brand while I'm out and about. :) Since I hate taking the time to put on makeup and having to use tools to apply it, everything I bought can be put on directly from the tube or with your hands. It feels more fun that way. What are your favorite inexpensive makeup products?

Choosing the Perfect Pair of Undies w/ U bu Kotex Panty Liners | Curvy Outfit Ideas | Petite Outfit Ideas | Plus Size Fashion | Fall Fashion | OOTD | Professional Casual Chic Fashion and Style Inspiration

Hi Ladies,
You know that feeling when something's not right? Why is that feeling so often linked to our undergarments? When I was in High School, I loved Victoria Secret's cotton undies. Every few months, I would go and buy up all their colors, but then the media started making a lot of fuss about  panty lines. (That was a dark day for comfort.) Eventually, I joined the band wagon and knew I needed to find some that didn't. This kicked off a hunt for the perfect "line-free" yet comfortable undies, and I finally came upon the boy short!

The War Against Popcorn & Zone Bars

Hi Ladies,
I'm Merrie and I'm a Carb-aholic. I'm addicted to Zone Fudge Graham bars, among other things. Once you are done reading this, please consider driving to Charlotte and prying the bars out of my hands. (I promise not to bite or scratch.) Then I'll need you to run down to Target, buy up all their bars and destroy them. While you're on the way, can you pop over to the popcorn shop across the street and shut them down? I don't have the will power to live near a store that sells 50 different kinds of popcorn, and I'm grown enough to admit that. Especially, when they have 4 different Caramel & Cheese mixes. Four different kinds!!  Also, they don't post any of their nutritional information online, so you know there are a million calories in each bag. In addition, can you tell them that no, it's not ok to just buy two bags instead of one if you want to mix them? First, I feel it's wrong to spend $10 on popcorn, and second...who do you think is going to eat that other bag of popcorn? Me! That's who! So, instead of getting one bag of god-knows-how-many-calories-are-in-it-popcorn, I'll be forced to eat 2!
Ok...calm down. This is not the end of the world. You've faced candy down before. But, I'm so weak now. I'm not in top form. I'm one bar away from saying "forget it" and just moving into their factory. How am I gonna get out of this? I just lost 10 pounds and am in jeopardy of gaining it all back. In addition, this is a very dangerous time of year for me. First, there's my birthday in August. Then Halloween hits in October. Then, "Bam!" it's Thanksgiving and Christmas, and before you know it it's Valentine's day. I'm on a slippery slope that's gonna lead  to having my stomach pumped for candy corn and conversation heart over dose. What am I gonna do?
Maybe I can get arrested. There's no gourmet popcorn in jail, right? Or maybe I can join the Navy and live on a submarine...I bet there's no popcorn down there either. But then I'd be cramped in a tiny capsule with 30 men, under 1000 tons of water. That might not be worth it...Sigh...I worked so hard to get here! It's not fair! Why can't I be too young to buy junk food? Or too old? Maybe they should have warning labels on junk food like cigarette cartons do. "Warning! This product is highly addictive and will be impossible to put down. You know that dress you love to wear? Try fitting into it after you've downed a box a Zone bars four nights in a row!" Anyone agree? If so, I'll get a petition started.
Having a  free will is a slippery slope. A tasty slope, but a slippery one none the less. I think this is the point where I admit that my life is outta control and not in my hands. This is when I appeal to a higher power:

Dear Mother Nature,
It's me again, Merrie! Thanks for making my cat's ring worm start to clear up, although giving Mary feline acne was a bit of a surprise. (Cats get acne? It's caused by using plastic bowls? Huh? What are you playing at?) Anyway, I'm sure I'll learn a lot from this experience. I have one more favor to ask: "Could you possibly smite the popcorn shop down the street?" I know it's a mom and pop store and the guy who owns it is really sweet, but I gotta think about myself now. Maybe you don't have to send a tornado to destroy it; maybe you could just make the owner realize that his true calling is in real estate, not popcorn. Yeah, that will work.
Thanks again for letting me know what you think and I look forward to hearing your response! I'm also open to any other ideas you may have. :)
Kind Regards,
Merrie K. (aka Desperately Dieting in Charlotte)
